Summary
Born at Guysboro, Nova Scotia, Canada. He enlisted 17 Aug 1864 in the United States Marine Corps at Brooklyn, New York. Mustered in as a Private. On 8 Sep 1864 he was transferred to the USS Vanderbilt of the North Atlantic Squadron. In Jan 1865 he was one of the storming party that captured Fort Fisher, North Carolina and was wounded and captured within the works. Although recaptured, he was too badly wounded for further active service. That same month suffering from bronchitis he was treated on the USS Vanderbilt and USS Vermont before being admitted to the Brooklyn Naval Hospital at New York. He was discharged on a Surgeon's Certificate 24 May 1865. He returned to Nova Scotia by 1871 and is listed in the Guysborough County, Canadian census. He married Jessie Margaret Forbes at Goshen, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada on 29 May 1877. By 1879 he settled at Naches, Yakima County, Washington Territory where he farmed. His wife died in Yakima County in 1888. Sinclair was a member of Meade Post No. 9 of Yakima, Yakima County, Washington serving as Surgeon in 1888. By 1890 he operated a sawmill in Ballard, King County, Washington. He was a charter member of Lt. Cushing Post No. 56 of Ballard serving as Chaplain in 1890, Commander in 1891 and Sergeant Major in 1892. He attended the 1890 National Encampment of the G.A.R. in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as Commander for the Department of Washington and Alaska of the G.A.R. in 1893-1894. He was elected as a delegate to the Republican State Convention in 1892. Prior to his death he returned to Yakima County but suffering from tuberculosis, he relocated to San Bernardino, San Bernardino County, California in Dec 1895 in hopes of benefitting his health. He died there less than three months later.
