Wounded in action on 6 May 1864 at the Wilderness, Virginia. Transferred to Company K, 97th New York Infantry on 7 Jun 1864. Discharged for disability at Davids Island, New York Harbor. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died at the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington. His grave marker lists his date of birth as 8 Aug 1842 contradicting his death certificate. Some of his military records list his last name as "Bennings".
