Born in Wormleysburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Entered Naval Service as an Acting Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy on 3 Dec 1861. The USS Constitution was assigned to train midshipmen at the Naval Academy during the Civil War. Graduated as a Midshipman on 25 Oct 1865. During this time, he reported that he "Volunteered for the Emergency in 1863. Was sent by Major General D. N. Couch, then at Harrisburg to Major General John F. Reynolds at Gettysburg who detailed me as Aid, Served on his Staff till he was killed, and then served as Aid to Major General Meade through the Battle." Commissioned as an Engineer on 1 Dec 1866. Promoted to Master on 12 Mar 1868, to Lieutenant on 26 Mar 1869, and Lieutenant Commander on 2 Aug 1879. Resigned from U.S. Navy on 30 Jun 1887. Elected a Companion of the First Class in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) through the California Commandery on 30 Dec 1885. Transferred to the Pennsylvania Commandery 8 May 1888. Transferred to the Washington Commandery as a Charter Member on 31 Dec 1890. Served the Washington Commandery as Recorder (1895-1902), Council (1905-1906), and Junior Vice Commander (1908-1909). A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Elected as a Delegate to the 1896 and 1897 Encampments of the Department of Washington and Alaska. Served as Post Commander in 1898. Died at his home in Tacoma, Washington. After the funeral, his body was cremated. At his request, the ashes were buried at sea.
