Born in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. A resident of Plymouth, Marshall County, Indiana when he enlisted in the 20th Indiana Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company C on 12 Mar 1862. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer. Transferred to Company D and re-mustered on 20 Feb 1864. Transferred to Company H, 5th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 21 Nov 1864. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. According to a newspaper article published on 30 May 1929, he was one of the 40 remaining members of Custer Post, which 20 years prior had a membership of more than 300. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 18 Aug 1913 and honorably discharged on 7 Aug 1915. Died at his home in Spanaway, Pierce County, Washington. His application for admission to the Washington State Soldiers Home in 1913 indicates he was born in Muncie, Indiana, contradicting his death certificate which indicates he was born in North Carolina.
