Born in Indiana. A resident of Greencastle, Putnam County, Indiana when he enlisted in the 49th Indiana Infantry at Jeffersonville, Clark County, Indiana. Mustered in as a Corporal in Company B on 21 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 3 Feb 1864. Promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to Field and Staff (F&S) on 1 Mar 1865. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. A member of George H. Thomas Post No. 17 of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Transferred to Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington on 19 Apr 1913. Served the Post as Officer of the Day in 1915 and Commander in 1916. Died in Tacoma, Washington.
