Mustered in as a Private in Company I at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois. Mustered out on 30 Jul 1861. A resident of Manlius, LaSalle County, Illinois when he enlisted in Ford's Independent Cavalry Company (or Company A Cavalry, 53rd Illinois Infantry) for three years at Ottawa, Illinois on 16 Jan 1862. Assigned to the 15th Illinois Cavalry as Company L on 25 Dec 1862. Transferred to the 10th Illinois Cavalry and mustered out on 17 Jan 1865. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Washington.
