According to his complied military service record, he enlisted in the 2nd California Cavalry for three years at San Francisco, California. Accepted his commission as Captain of Company H and was mustered on 5 Sep 1861. Company H moved to Fort Churchill, Nevada Territory. On 17 Dec 1861 was in command of a detachment to Ruby Valley asked for by Governor Nye of Nevada Territory to protect the overland mail from the Indians. On 15 Feb 1862 returned to Fort Churchill from Ruby Valley. On 29 Apr 1862 in command of Company H on detached service to Walker River, Nevada Territory. 1 Sep 1862 transferred from Fort Churchill to Major McGarry’s command at Camp Douglas, Utah Territory. On 24 Jan 1863 left post with Colonel Connor to join former detachment on a scout against the Indians. On 29 Jan 1863 badly wounded in left hip and right wrist believed fatal during engagement with Indians at Bear River, Washington Territory (today Idaho). Taken back to Camp Douglas where he was sick in quarters until August 1863. On 14 Sep 1863 on medical furlough for 60 days to San Francisco. 31 Dec 1863 reassigned to recruiting depot at the Presidio of San Francisco. 30 Apr 1865 on detached service commanding the Provost Guard in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California. On 30 Jul 1865 in command of Camp Union, Sacramento, California. Mustered out on 4 Sep 1865 to be re-mustered for three years. 4 Oct 1865 in command of Provost Guard in Wilmington, Los Angeles County, California. 14 Dec 1865 on detached service to Drum Barracks, Los Angeles, California. 31 Jan 1866 in command of Drum Barracks. Mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died at Rosedale, Pierce County, Washington.
