Born in Ashtabula County, Ohio. A resident of Tuscola, Tuscola County, Michigan when he enlisted in the 29th Michigan Infantry for three years at Tuscola, Michigan. Mustered in as a Private in Company A on 26 Aug 1864. Promoted to Sergeant Major and transferred to Field and Staff (F&S) on 15 Sep 1864. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 6 Jan 1865. Discharged to accept promotion to 2nd Lieutenant of Company C on 9 Apr 1865. Mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on 6 Sep 1865. Discharged at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served the Post as Quartermaster Sergeant in 1894 and Commander in 1897. Died in Maricopa County, Arizona. Did at times go by the name "George" instead of Guilford. Wife Julia White.
