Born in Michigan. A resident of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan when he enlisted in the 3rd Michigan Infantry for three years at Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mustered in as 5th Corporal of Company A on 10 Jun 1861. Wounded in action at Groveton, Virginia on 29 Aug 1862. Re-entered service in the 6th Michigan Cavalry at organization. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company F on 13 Oct 1862 and mustered the same day. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant on 9 May 1863 and mustered on 10 May 1863. Commissioned Captain on 22 Oct 1863 and mustered on 23 Oct 1863. Wounded in action at Trevillian Station, Virginia on 12 Jun 1864. Commissioned Major on 21 Jun 1865. Mustered on 22 Jun 1865 and transferred to Field and Staff (F&S). A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served the Post as Senior Vice Commander in 1888, Commander in 1889, and Officer of the Guard in 1894. Served as Commander of the Department of Washington and Alaska, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) for the one-year term of 1891-1892. At the time of his death, he was serving as Bailiff for Pierce County Superior Court Judge M. L. Clifford. Died in Tacoma, Washington.
