Born in Gardiner, Kennebec County, Maine. A resident of Gardiner, Maine when he enlisted in the 2nd Maine Cavalry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company C on 3 Dec 1863. Promoted to Corporal (date not stated). Mustered out at Barrancas, Florida on 6 Dec 1865 and honorably discharged at Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine. A member of H. R. Loomis Post No. 80 of Gig Harbor, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Commander in 1904. Later joined Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. According to a newspaper article published on 30 May 1928, he was one of the 50 remaining members of Custer Post, which 19 years prior had a membership of more than 300. Admitted to the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington on 27 Jan 1914 and honorably discharged in May 1927. Re-admitted to the Veterans Home on 3 Sep 1927 where he died. His headstone incorrectly indicates he died on 12 Jan 1929. Both his death certificate and Veterans Home file clearly states he died on 2 Jan 1929.
