Born in Liverpool, England. A resident of Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin when he enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry. Mustered in as a Sergeant of Company E. Wounded at the 1st Battle of Bull Run on 21 Jul 1861. Promoted to Captain and transferred to the 18th Wisconsin Infantry on 18 Dec 1861. Commissioned Captain of Company F with date of rank 20 Dec 1861. Promoted to Major 1 Jul 1865 but not mustered. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. Became a member of George H. Thomas Post No. 5 of Olympia, Thurston County, Washington on 9 Jun 1890 and transferred in 1899 to Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. On 29 Oct 1907 admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington where he died.
