Born in Wisconsin. A resident of Waupaca, Waupaca County, Wisconsin when he joined Company A, 8th Wisconsin Infantry as a Private on 7 Aug 1861. Promoted to Corporal (date not stated). Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer. Discharged for promotion on 3 Mar 1864. Enlisted as 1st Sergeant in Company A, 71st U.S. Colored Infantry for three years at Black River Bridge, Mississippi on 3 Mar 1864. The 71st U.S. Colored Infantry consolidated with the 70th U.S. Colored Infantry on 8 Nov 1864. As a result of this consolidation, he was mustered out on 8 Nov 1864, but it was reported on 14 Nov 1864 he was on his Veteran's furlough to Wisconsin and on 18 Dec 1864 he was reported present at Natchez, Mississippi with Company A, 70th U.S. Colored Infantry. Apparently, he was discharged sometime after 18 Dec 1864. A resident of Waupaca, Wisconsin when he was commissioned as Captain of Company D, 50th Wisconsin Infantry. Promoted to Major on 18 May 1865, but not mustered. Mustered out at the expiration of his term of service. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Elected as an Alternate to the 1907 Encampment of the Department of Washington and Alaska. On 12 Mar 1914 admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington where he died.
