WSH Grave #2-M-4. Born in Oldham, England. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy for three years at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May 1861. He apparently enlisted under the name John Palmer. Reported to the USS Princeton the receiving ship at Philadelphia and would serve aboard the USS Louisiana before being discharged at the expiration of his term of service in May 1864. Enlisted in the 9th New York Heavy Artillery for one year at Albany, Albany County, New York. Mustered in as a Private in Company I, the same day he enlisted. Mustered out with his Company at Washington, DC. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. On 1 Aug 1918 he was admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington where he died.
