Born in Rochester, Fulton County, Indiana. A resident of Peoria, Mahaska County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 8th Iowa Infantry for three years. Mustered in to Company H on 12 Sep 1861. Missing in action and taken prisoner during the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on 6 Apr 1862. Re-enlisted and re-mustered as a Veteran Volunteer on 11 Jan 1864. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 8 Jul 1898 and discharged at his own request on 3 Jul 1900. Re-admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home on 10 Oct 1900 and discharged on 12 May 1901 and again re-admitted on 16 Jun 1903. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California on 2 Jan 1912 and discharged at his own request on 20 Apr 1912. Re-admitted to the National Home at Sawtelle, California on 23 Sep 1913 and discharged at his own request on 11 Aug 1914. On 22 Sep 1914 re-admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home where he died.
