Born in Ohio. A resident of Logansport, Cass County, Indiana when he enlisted in the 46th Indiana Infantry for three years at Logansport, Indiana. Mustered in as a Private in Company B on 5 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 2 Jan 1864. Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and transferred to Field and Staff (F&S) on 4 Jun 1865. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 6 May 1903 and discharged at his own request on 1 Mar 1906. Re-admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home on 20 Nov 1915. Died at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. Some military records spell his last name as "McCarthy".
