A resident of Waubeka, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin when he enlisted in the 8th Wisconsin Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company C. Promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant and transferred to Field and Staff (F&S) on 25 Dec 1861. Promoted to Quartermaster and 1st Lieutenant on 3 May 1864. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 7 Oct 1908 and honorably discharged on 8 Mar 1910. Admitted to the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington on 11 Mar 1910 and discharged at his own request on 1 Oct 1910. Re-admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home on 4 Oct 1910. Died at Fannie C. Paddock Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. Some military records spell his last as "McAuley" or "McCauley".
