Born in Van Buren County, Iowa. A resident of Polk County, Iowa when he enlisted in the 39th Iowa Infantry. Mustered in as a Private in Company I the same day he enlisted. Transferred to Company I, 7th Iowa Infantry on 30 May 1865. Promoted to 5th Corporal on 26 Jun 1865. Mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. On 30 Jun 1905 admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington where he died. His military and pension records spell his last name as "Leftwich" which contradicts the spelling on his headstone.
