Born in Elizabeth, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. A resident of Elizabeth, Illinois when he enlisted in the 96th Illinois Infantry for one year at Dixon, Lee County, Illinois. Mustered in as a Private in Company F at Dixon, Illinois the same day he enlisted. Mustered out with his Company at Camp Harker near Nashville, Tennessee on 10 Jun 1865. Honorably discharged at Camp Douglas, Illinois. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 24 Jun 1915 and was likely discharged in 1922. Re-admitted to the Soldiers Home on 8 Mar 1923. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. According to a newspaper article published on 30 May 1929, he was one of the 40 remaining members of Custer Post, which 20 years prior had a membership of more than 300. Died at Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington. Some military records spell his last name as "Damson".
