Born in Pipestone, Berrien County, Michigan. Enlisted in the 1st Michigan Sharpshooters for three years at Pipestone, Michigan. Mustered in as a Private in Company I on 22 Oct 1863. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 5 Apr 1911 and honorably discharged on 13 Oct 1914. This allowed him, along with his wife Charlotte, to be admitted the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil, Kitsap County, Washington on 7 Oct 1914 where he died. He was buried on 5 Sep 1918 in the Washington State Veterans Home Cemetery. On 16 May 1932 a permit was issued for his body to be disinterred, allowing him to be buried next to his wife. His original government headstone was also moved at that time. On 11 Oct 1976 the Washington State Veterans Home ordered a new government headstone which was installed at their cemetery as a cenotaph.
