Born in Winslow, Kennebec County, Maine. A resident of Troy, Waldo County, Maine when he enlisted in the 13th Maine Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company C on 4 Dec 1861. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 1 Feb 1864. Re-mustered at Berwick, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana on 29 Feb 1864. Transferred to the 30th Maine Infantry on 25 Dec 1864. Mustered out at Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia and honorably discharged. A member of J. W. Geary Post No. 7 of Eugene, Lane County, Oregon. Later joined Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
