Born in Pennsylvania. A resident of Toleston, Lake County, Indiana when he enlisted in the 12th Illinois Cavalry for three years at Toleston, Indiana. Mustered in as a Private in Company C at Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois on 28 Feb 1862. Re-enlisted and mustered in as a Veteran Volunteer for three years at St. Louis, Missouri on 29 Feb 1864. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on 2 Mar 1865. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant on 10 May 1865 and mustered on 20 May 1865 at Memphis, Tennessee. Commissioned Captain on 21 Aug 1865 and mustered on 23 Sep 1865 at Houston, Texas. Resigned his commission. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Died in Tacoma, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
