Born in Stockholm, Sweden. Enlisted under the name of Henry Gothard in the 3rd Massachusetts Cavalry for three years at Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Mustered in as a Private in Company M at Boston, Massachusetts on 4 Mar 1864. Transferred to Company A at Camp Russell, Virginia on 28 Nov 1864. Mustered out with his Company at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas on 28 Sep 1865. Discharged at Boston, Massachusetts. A member of Phil H. Sheridan Post No. 44 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Commander in 1915, 1916 and 1917. Became a member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Washington. According to a newspaper article published on 30 May 1929, he was one of the 40 remaining members of Custer Post, which 20 years prior had a membership of more than 300. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 23 Jan 1926. Died in Tacoma, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
