Born in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. A resident of Kittery, York County, Maine when he enlisted in the 32nd Maine Infantry for three years. Mustered in as a Private in Company K at Augusta, Kennebec County, Maine on 6 May 1864. Transferred to Company K, 31st Maine Infantry on 12 Dec 1864. Promoted to Corporal and later to Sergeant. Mustered out and honorably discharged near Alexandria, Virginia. He also served during the Spanish-American War as a Captain, Commissary of Subsistence, U.S. Volunteers being commissioned on 20 Jun 1898 and honorably discharged on 12 May 1899. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Served as Post Patriotic Instructor in 1913. Admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Sawtelle, Los Angeles County, California on 23 Aug 1910 and discharged at his own request on 21 Feb 1913. Died in Tacoma, Washington. He is buried in a G.A.R. section of the cemetery.
