Born in Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania. A resident of Colon, St. Joseph County, Michigan when he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company D, 25th Michigan Infantry. Mustered on 11 Sep 1862. Commissioned Captain on 7 Apr 1863 and mustered on 1 May 1863. Wounded in action at Deep Bottom, Virginia on 28 Jul 1864. Wounded in action again on 15 Dec 1864. Mustered out at Salisbury, North Carolina. A member of Custer Post No. 6 of Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. Admitted to the Washington State Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, Washington on 13 Nov 1893 where he died. Some military records spell his last name as "McCrary".
